Apologies to the two people out there who’ve been subscribed to this RSS feed. A LOT has occurred over the last few weeks that hasn’t yet been documented.
The lathe was torn down to a flat tabletop (which i didn’t actually photograph, this is as close as I got)
The past few weeks were spent removing about 40 years of paint (we’ve since had a revised built date of August 1964) I ten spent the spare moments masking the top of the table, degreasing, prepping painting, waiting, painting, etc...
In the pictures that follow, you’ll notice I only painted down to the belt-line. The paint lower than that really isn’t in that bad a shape, and it’s something I could restore after I start making chips. (read: probably never)
A steady stream of boxes has been arriving with Lube, consumables, cutting tools, electrics, books, etc.
The ‘tough’ part of the restoration is nearly completed. The apron, cross slide, headstock and tailstock have all been stripped. The headstock has had its second coat of paint, and the crossslide and tailstock have their first coats curing.
The coolest part was the test reassembly, everything still moves correctly and smoothly! Looks like I haven’t done anything irreparable.
(note the vfd remote display’s been mounted...do NOT notice it’s not exactly level. I swear it was when I laid it out.)
And the bits and pieces are coming together:
Only the collet stand is completely unpainted, everything else that’s getting paint, has paint!
